Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Saturday 26 April
Russell Rd, Moseley, Birmingham - 10:30am - 2 Hours

Martin Tierney
We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

Zoom Lenses.

Saturday 03 May
Hockley, Livery street - 10:30am - 2 Hours
Birmingham Photography Group

The Zoom lens is one of the most versatile tools in a photographer's arsenal. A zoom lens is a system of camera lens elements for which the focal length can be varied, as opposed to a fixed-focal-length lens. A true zoom lens or optical zoom lens is a type of parfocal lens, one that maintains focus when its focal length changes.
From every day to amateur to professional, zoom lenses are built to get you closer quickly without having to adjust your position. There are zoom lenses for every use and skill level. From sports, wildlife, and portraits. A zoom lens allows you to adjust the focal length of the lens within a specific range. In other words, you can change the angle of view and make it narrower (zoom in) or wider (zoom out).

Street art is a unique and colorful art form and can be found in all kinds of nooks and crannies in cities all over the world. Capturing art in the streets in photographs can be tricky because these urban art pieces are in public spaces, that are busy and usually filled with a decent amount of traffic. Sometimes you include the people and sometimes, you get super heros!!!

This October image of a chipmunk was taken on my Lanark County property, I prefer to photograph small wildlife such as this fellow in a natural rustic setting. I always take my images of wildlife big or small early morning or late afternoon?not only are creatures more active but the low angle of light provides better modeling of the subject. When I frame my subjects, I look for angles that provide uncluttered backgrounds, I leave negative space in the framing to allow for text to be added if nee

I recently acquired an older exotic lens, probably circa 1980s. It is a Nikon 400mm f2.8 AI-S which is a completely manual lens with no VR. I paired it with my Nikon D850 to see if I could learn to tackle manual focus. The hummingbirds are congregating on the front of my property where agave plants are flowering at this time of year. This makes it easier for me to practice. This Broad-Billed Hummingbird landed on a stick. The camera settings were 1/3200s at f2.8, auto ISO-320. This lens is old,
